Politically Correct?

What is this terms origin, and what is political about it? I believe term is incorrect itself, an oxymoron, and poorly describes the issue.

Wiki defines “Politically correct” is a term used to describe as language or policies or measures that are intended to avoid offense or disadvantage to members of a particular group of society.   The definition does not include political terms like Wigs or Tories, Republicans or Democrats, Liberals or Conservatives. The definition does include the word “society”.

Over the past couple thousand of years humans have gathered in cities, living in closer proximity than before. People come to the cities from all over, making cities a variety of people, people other than you and I. Cities and societies developed and agreed upon certain rules of civility to allow people to live together in peace and harmony. We try not to use derogatory terms for people or foreigners. The derogatory terms make people feel bad and disliked. It is socially more acceptable to use the appropriate name for foreigners like Italians, or Irish, because this is socially accepted.

I believe the term “Politically correct” should be replaced by “Socially accepted” or “Socially agreeable” because there is no political reason only social reasons.

Why correctness? How can these changes in our social speech be correct or incorrect? Is there rule book where these issues and words are defined as the correct or incorrect?  No, there is no absolute definition of correctness only what is acceptable, and that it does not denigrate or disadvantage groups of people.

My conclusion

Politically correct is not. There are no politics involved, and there is no authority on correctness. For these reasons society would be better of to leave this divisive term behind and use the term socially acceptable or social agreeable.

When someone says this or that is “politically correct” or not,  I can ask them, what is political about it?
