Recent studies of dogs have shown dogs have a morality. In this study, two dogs were separated by a simple wire fence. The dogs were not fed regularly, and they became very hungry. Then one morning one of the dogs received an extra meal and ate it. The second dog was able to watch the first dog eat. The next day the same thing happen, one dog was fed, and the second was not. But the first dog only ate small portion of its food, and pushed the bowl under the fence to the other dog. The second dog ate all the remaining food.
The first dog exhibited the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have others to do unto you. The experiment was repeated many times with similar outcomes. How did these dogs learn this? Dogs do not worship a god, dogs do not go to Sunday school to learn these rules. Dogs have empathy. This rule is innate, dogs do not need a god to tell them what is right or wrong. Dogs share their food when it is right.
So, Let’s review the ten commandments, it’s been awhile, and see how dogs do.
- Thou shalt not have any gods before me.
1D Dogs do alright here, Dogs don’t have a god, let alone two, Apparently dogs do just fine without a god.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
2D Dogs are still ok here. Dogs don’t make images. Lay a few newspapers down on the floor and see what puppies think of the graven images.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in Vain
3D Once again, no problem for dogs, unless god’s name is Bark, or Woof!
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
4D Yes, dogs are good here, for them everyday is holy, when they’re with a well fed group.
5. Honor thy father and mother.
5D Yes! dogs excel on this count. Dogs love everyone, especially Mom and Dad, sis and brother, packmates, maybe even the family cat.
6. Thou shalt not murder.
6D Wild or even well kept dogs do not murder, dogs do kill for food or in defense of their puppies, just like humans.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
7D Dogs lose on this one, but dogs don’t get married, dogs don’t mate for life, see rule number 5 above. Dogs love everyone.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
8D Oops. Dogs lose this one, too many t-bones have been swiped from the kitchen counter, for dogs to get a pass on this one. The only defense is; a dog may sometimes bring home a dead rabbit for everyone.
9. Thou shalt not bring false witness against thy neighbor.
9D Dog are neutral on this one. Some dogs bark at night and wake the neighbors. But dogs can also provide uncanny judgements on good and bad people.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors house, wife, or slaves.
10D This is more difficult. We have all heard stories of the bad dog owner, when his dog ran away. But, dogs exhibit incredible loyalty, to the family, or the pack, in spite of better pastures next door. Dog wins. One last point, dogs do not have slaves, unlike the person who wrote this.
Conclusion;
Dogs win! and show us god-like ways. Maybe Dogs are God on earth put here as examples of love, devotion, and understanding the golden rule. Dogs do not need a god to understand the golden rule.
Dog bless you.
